Sony Rolly dancing MP3 player

Anonymous Coward

A pointless waste of crap

'nuf said really.

Mike

Trust SONY...

Thumb Down

They've invented The Dancing Sunflower 2.0.

Ideala2

He's so cuuuute.

I wouldn't hesitate to spend £240 of someone elses money to call him my own.

Scott

AC Adaptor

Thumb Up

Just to correct the reviewer, the AC adaptor is to be made available to buy from your local Sony Centre very shortly.

Anonymous Coward

Most pointless thing ever.

Unhappy

Maybe you'd lay out twenty quid for a bit of silliness like this, but for the cost you could get an Xbox360, or an Ipod Touch, or something equally cool.

Happy

If ever there was an opportunity for a video clip in the article, this is it.

Peyton

While I wouldn't actually want one

This does make me curious about how people might interact with this. I know at dance parties, often times no one wants to break the ice and be the first couple out on the floor. I can't help but wonder if you rolled this little guy out there first, if it wouldn't be successful in getting the ball rolling... Certainly a conversation piece if nothing else.

Anonymous Hero

eh?

Paris Hilton

This makes about as much sense to me as having a wooden spoon with build in air conditioning.

Paris....even she makes more sense than the Rolly.

Now we know..

where the profit for the ridiculous premium we pay for Blu Ray devices is going.

too bad it's not something useful.

But I can see plenty of the iPhone crowd buying them, and sharing "dance routines" online, and stupid youtube vids coming.

Chris Matchett

I saw this in a Sony store in Westfield yesterday

Thumb Down

and after reading this article I still don't know what it is. £240 of fail.

Anonymous Coward

Miserable buggers, aren't you?

Thumb Up

Did someone feed your Aibos own-brand batteries or something? Yes, it's pointless, but so what? It looks like ridiculous fun, and it's hardly going to cause people to become mass murderers or rapists, is it?

I want one. And I shall feed it drill'n'bass. Oh yes.

A full review for Xmas = $$$

Paris Hilton

Even Paris can spot paid advertising.

I'm in the middle of searching for a Linux Systems Administrator but could not resist a look at this thing in action :

Thanks Sony - that's 5 minutes of my life I'll never get back

I have one

Thumb Up

Got it a few weeks ago, and honestly it's rather nice. Do I regret the price of it? A little. Would I buy it again if I could go back and think it over? Yes. I like it, the wife likes it, it's fun to muck about with.

Anonymous Coward

you could get an Xbox360, or an Ipod Touch, or something equally cool.

Flame

Xbox and iPod cool?.... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Anonymous Coward

Well...

Thumb Up

I know its a total waste of money, but having seen some videos of this in action there is a very immature part of me that really, really wants one of these. In fact, its very pointlessness is key to its appeal. Put on a screen and some buttons and it loses the simple fun that I like about it.

Ben

I saw this...

Thumb Down

in Japan over a year ago. I remember being struck by how much could have been achieved if the same amount of R&D had been applied to a more worthy goal.

It was pointless then and is pointless now.

og

hand-relief

Paris Hilton

"Playing with the Rolly is a bit like induling in a quick spot of hand-relief when you should be working."

so it *is* for tossers then. thought so.

Paris, because she never has to reattach *her* flaps

Jeremy

Oh grow up you boring farts

Thumb Up

It's the best thing I've ever seen in my life!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3HQYLFf-aUM

It's a finite improbability machine - they only people who don't like it and think it's a debasement of science are the people who don't get invited to "those kinds of parties"

Tanuki

Eeek!

Paris Hilton

Why does its shape remind me of some kind of sex-toy?

Paris - because she'd know where to stuff it, even if Sony don't.

Tom

I have to say...

Thumb Up

This is the most intriguing bit of technology I have seen in a long time!!!

Want one!

Lukin Brewer

Aaaaaaaagh!

Joke

Its *not* a sex toy - it's the Q-Bomb!!!!! Don't turn it up too loud, it's very sensitive to vibration!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053084/

I'll wait for them to bundle a combination satellite subwoofer and pointing device with it (a.k.a. the mouse that roars!) :-D

E

North America not target market

I expect Sony will sell tonnes and tonnes of these in Japan, probably also South Korea and urban China. It ought to be an absolute smash with the teenage girl set in those markets - because it is just so damned cute, not for the prurient reasons bruited above.

Pirate Dave

Porn

Pirate

So what kind of moves does it perform if you pipe a porn soundtrack through it? Yeowch - I wouldn't think those flapping ears are trouser-friendly.

Otherwise it seems a pointless waste of money for all but the wealthy.

g00p

aw come on..

Thumb Up

..give the little thing a break!

over priced yes

amazingly fun & cute (yes, cute, im a girl) yes indeed!

warm ur hearts, its christmas!

Is it just me or do David Cameron and George Osborne collectively seem to have

Linux

...all the conscience and economic nous, not to mention common touch, of an AIBO? I really can't picture anyone wanting to vote for them, who is either over the age of, say, 33, or who hasn't been in a coma for the last two or three decades.

Mike Richards

Should make a bright pink one

'Cos I'd pay money to see a pack of AIBOs chasing that around the room.

Liam

i saw one of these on tv recently

that gadget programme the DAVE channel has.

goldie (d&b bloke) had one and he loves it. it did look pretty cool to be honest.

i think im too much of an audio purist to use one but they do look like fun

Mr ChriZ

Eva!

Coat

It looks awesome. These guys have no sense of humour don't listen to them.

Mines the one with flashing lights coming out the pockets.

Robert Hill

FANTASTIC TECH!!!

Thumb Up

OK, it's pointless in my age bracket (40+), but THIS is just a great piece of thinking or at least creating. It needs to be viewed more as a piece of tech art than a useful device, and as THAT it is blooming successful. It's got a nice piece of industrial design, cool aesthetics, let's the user actually create with it inteteractively, and is fun at parties.

If you can't see the value in that, then as someone observed above, you probably don't get invited to those sorts of parties, probably because you are so literal and dull that your company is not that interesting.

As for the price, most art costs a LOT more than the tubes of oil paints and the canvass...why should this be different?

I will never buy one, but I am glad they exist, just to show that cool technology can be used for something other than powering autonomous, unmanned carrier-based bombers...
