Well of course it can't

In Wal-Mart stores drop cheap-as-chips Linux PC

The people who start with "for most things people use a computer for..." are wrong.

Moreso when they then go on "...you only need a teabag for a microprocessor powered by a piece of zinc and copper stuck in a jug of water..."

Of course people don't want that.

I used linux, for 10 years before Tovalds wrote it. But even so during that decade wait, I never thought "when torvalds has finished, I really want a crappy underspecced PC that's useless for anything to run it on" No siree.

Of course they'll sell a few to folk who already have computers and gadets coming out of there ears. As Les Dennis's character on Extras joked "Gays'll laugh at anything it's easy to make them laugh..." similarly "Geeks will buy anything, just stick buttons on it..."

The rest of the population, that wants a computer will buy a real computer. One that can do what they need. Indeed most will actually "make do" with one that's underpowered because of their budget.
