Matt 13

and the news is??

In Microsoft to launch incompatible telephone

Manufacturer releases basic handset, incompatible with a yet to be released premium OS??

im sure nokia have basic phones that run a different OS to thier topend handsets.....

Matt 13

waste my taxes on that rubbish!

In Experts rubbish iPhone for health use

Panasonic are another company that produce a medical tablet, can be disenfected, steamed, dropped and runs for ever on its battery, Windows based so all the software runs without needing recoding and with encryption and biometric logins, retively secure... it also looks like nothing you would really want to steal!!!

the iphone is cool, but its a consumer fasion accesory get something thats fit for purpose!

with the iphone, wouldnt all the NHS software have to be availiable to the public in the appstore???

Matt 13

In Apple uncovers child workers in its plants

Joke

well, as everyone knows, apple products are feats of miniturisation, adult hands are just too big to consistently build these products!

In Toshiba Camileo S20 camcorder

Thumb Down

I got the sister model of this camcorder last year on release... its awful it may technically be HD, but in 1080i your hard pressed to notice it over the compression and interlace errors, the colours too were crazy! try videoing a 2 yearold on his new trampoline in the sunshine... nope! it worked ok for almost static subjects though! in the end, sent it back waited a few months and got the kodak, which is much better, but not a patch on the titanium sony thing my mum bought!!

overall, the kodak is passable, the Tosh - an SD camcorder produces a better image!

Matt 13

Genius!

In Michigan man in DIY rocket sled explosion

Thumb Up

It takes a special breed of man to come up with ideas like that...

Top bloke!

Matt 13

money...

In Microsoft hit with cash-for-Points lawsuit

i like the way the PS3 store works... if you want to buy a game/movie/etc you look at the price which is displayed in local currency and you pay that amount...

tricky concept, eh??!!

Matt 13

maybe

In Teen attacks father in Fifa 2009 fight

Joke

Is this a case of real life prompts video game violence?? if there was no hooliganism or viloence in real football, maybe Mario wouldnt have brought it back home?? on this unsubstantiated evidence and with kneejerk scaremongering factored in, the only way to prevent this in the future is - BAN FOOTBALL NOW!!

If his dad wasnt such a tightwad and bought little Mario Fifa10 he would have been a little more sympathetic!!

Matt 13

In Selfridges punts £1,800 Spanish ham

In Asus confirms e-book reader trio

what is the colour display? a traditional battery munching un-sunlight readable LCD??

Anyway, I like the idea of the little 5" - fingers crossed its less than 100... ideal around the 70 quid mark and ill have 2! :) but... back in reality land!!!

Matt 13

it did break, but....

In Beeb reporter breaks Sonim's 'unbreakable' phone with fishtank

Thumb Up

he was hammering the hardest to protect, most delicate part of the phone bloody hard against a corner... the forces on the screen were pretty extreme! the fact that it took about 4 or 5 attempts to break is really very good going!!

you dont know how tough something is till it breaks... for me, seeing that it does take that sort of abuse is a good selling point! and if the screen is proper daylight readable, ill have one for days on the yacht

Matt 13

he did....

In Beeb reporter breaks Sonim's 'unbreakable' phone with fishtank

Thumb Up

and its got a broken screen!!!

Matt 13

until...

In Lenovo demos mini laptop with slip-out screen

FAIL

you wanted to read a book for more than a few hours, or read a book outdoors...........

Matt 13

tablets...

In Lenovo demos mini laptop with slip-out screen

there were lots of tablets without keyboards... Ive had a couple since 2002! just a 10" screen, ULV centrino, biometric logon and a digitiser screen for input....

incredibly fiddly to use with XP Tablet, better with SP2, then Vista handwriting recognition was excellent, but you still cant beat a real keyboard to type on...

Once the wow factor had faded, people stopped using them... i think the same will happen here, except the Apple connection may keep them alive and inspire more clones for a while...

Matt 13

yeah, but....

In Newspaper e-reader launched

take your ipad outside in the sun and try and read it - im expecting a huge fail. even the daylight screen on my toughbook struggles in really, really bright sun and I have to crank the backlight... which in turn eats the battery!

I was so close to getting a Sony pocket just before christmas, but i think i may wait now! I like this reader, well, from the news article atleast... just make it sub 200 and able to read lots of formats and i may just get one...

Matt 13

later this year??!

In World's first camera-cum-ski goggle developed

Sub 100? Thats not a bad price, for what sounds like an ok spec camera and goggles combo!

but...... later this year, thats no good for when the snow Clears and the slopes close in a couple of months! i need them now!

In 25kg of cocaine hits Spanish supermarket shelves

Thumb Up

And people put down these cut price supermarkets for their lack of variety!! where else could you buy banannas, milk, 2 way motorcycle radio and cocane all in one go!!!

and dont forget Lidl's catch phrase 'cheaper!'

Matt 13

to bt, or not to BT??

In Dongles pricey and pointless, says Bluetooth SIG

I used to use my winmo (i see a common theme here!) as a BT or usb modem on my orange contract, but now i have my iphone, I get charged double for that honour! data should be data, no matter how you use it... I guess the idea is, on the phone you wil get bored a lot quicker surfing than you would on a real pc/laptop, so to discourage that use...

I now use a voda dongle, which since june I have managed to run up the huge costs of £16 of surfing!!! thank ou voda for your non expiring topups!! :)

but back on BT - its all very good, but you dont half get a castrated transfer speed!

Matt 13

K.I.S.S

In Google flirts with new-look home page

Thumb Down

the reason I use google is that is quick, clean and simple... I type searches and it gives me answers...

If i wanted clutter around my answers id Bing or use another search engine... although ironicly Id probably have to google those first - do they exist anymore?!

a big thumbs down from me... the current layout aint broke, so dont 'fix' it

Matt 13

almost excited!!

In Samsung X520 notebook

damn! and there was me hoping for a decent battery!! My UX1 on extended battery will sometimes hit 5 hours under normal use - 80%backlight, wifi, web, MSN and outlook

and my T2300 win7 asus test laptop with a CCL 15" display is currently boasting 4:42 on the battery guage - and this machine is 3 years old!

Id have hoped that using current, state of the art low power chippery that battery claims were based somewhere in reality! especally as mentioned the Dell and the PB can manage some quite astonishing and realistically achevable times (not running freedos from ram on an external monitor type tests!!)

Ive seen a few machines now that ship 4gb RAM with 32bit windows! its not as if 64bit win is driverless or unsupportable like it used to be! I suppose in this case it works with the batterylife claims... heres something we will offer, but you cant use!! :)

Matt 13

on the other hand

In Microsoft hit with lawsuit over Xbox memory card ban

Troll

there is the evil sony corporation with their reliable consoles, free online gaming experience, Full Blueray & full HD capability and encouraging users to fit a generic hard drive inside the

machine or use an ordinary usb hard drive for storage.........

*Im not a fanboi, I just dont like being done dry!!!

Troll, well that is just blatently obvious!!! :)

Matt 13

wheres the firework shoppe................

Matt 13

tosh!

In iPhone conquers half the (smartphone) world

Or, if you look at things the other way round... iPhone users are less bothered about their software being filled with adverts!

while the winmob and Blackberry users (professional types i guess, as opposed to trendies!) are a little more selective with what they are force fed!

In E-car driven from Dover to Calais

Matt 13

not so good!

In iPhone to become Blighty's favourite smartphone

Thumb Down

I like my Iphone, but I dont like the fact that every 3rd person has the same phone!! its hardly exclusive! and I like being a bit of a poseur! All my previous smartphones - P800 onwards have been premium devices with an air of exclusivity!

everyone having the same phone is fine, if the thing is free, but if im paying (a lot!) then i like being a little unique!

Matt 13

where can i get these jobs??

In Cheerleaders in danger from cheerleading

Pint

another report from the Department of Stating the Bleeding Obvious!

i wonder how many hours of 'research' footage of cheerleaders was watched to come to these conclusions!

Matt 13

18seconds?

In Acer Aspire One D250 with Android

Thumb Down

thats hardly instant seeing as though windows 7 boots in 30 seconds including biometric logon with my Sony UX1

what a waste of time!

Matt 13

oh...

In Acer Aspire One D250 with Android

and restoring from hibinate? around 10 seconds... so why waste valuable life for a crippled OS and no access to all your files and stuff?

Matt 13

In Baying mob turns on miniskirted Brazilian uni student

Thumb Up

good god! she can wear what the hell she wants! the smalller the better as far as im concerend!

Matt 13

blueray...

In Memory maker to sell films on Flash

Solid state is all very good, but dont forget an SD card can be a lot more fragile than an optical disc... scratch a CD/DVD/HD-DVD/BD and you can polish out the imperfection and keep on trucking.. yank an SD at the wrong moment and bang, all data gone! I know that is generally due to an interupted write process, but you still get catastrophic data loss... I have over 200 DVD's and BD's and the number that are un playable is pretty much zero. on the other hand Ive had USB flash drives, SD cards and Memory Stick all corrupt in an unrecoverable way...

on the other hand, Im all for a 50gb SD card with a film for less than a tenner :)

Matt 13

a fool and his data.....

In Swissdisk suffers spectacular cloud snafu

oh look, another scenario where remotely stored data just vanishes! the new system should provide 99.95% uptime? I expect the original blurb prbably gave a similar figure... its the odd bits of % that cause the real damage...

I hope the users had a real backup of their work........

Matt 13

who needs it?

In Blu-ray dropped from updated iMacs?

Thumb Down

yes, who indeed, hell, who needed dvds? vhs prduced an adequate image on the tv of yesteryear....

Apple arebeng petty... BD is currently the cutingedge consumer high capacity optical disk... Macs target base use to be graphic design and video... if you cant bun HD edits to an easilly transportable medum wht use is an hd editing rig??

My vaio laptop has a slimline bd rw drive and it doesnt impact battery any more than a dvd burner. so that argument is silly, and hdmi out on the laptop means easy playingofbd films at my pikey friends houses!

oh and my old powerbookhad a dvd rw in it years ago!

Matt 13

big drives...

In Fast USB 2.0 Flash Drives

with the corsair being that big and expensive, wouldnt it make more sense to buy a proper 2.5" sata ssd and just bung it in a caddy?? more speed and with the ocz less than 200notes a big saving!

Matt 13

loadsa old crap!

In UK stuck in tech time-warp, finds report

Pc Engine, Silicon Graphics Onyx, amd k450 laptop, Psion 3c, but to name a few...

love decent old tech!! :)

no cassettes or vhs! yuck!

Matt 13

how much??

In Nokia netbook to land on 22 October

whats the pricing??? £700 or £1250 over 2 years? - £220 for the laptop, £20 monthly charge and £23 data charge???

or is it just an ordinary netbook that would be free on a data plan that O2 are hoping to gullabalise people into buying?!

3g data is a funny thing... my Voda dongle still has £5 left from the inital £15 topup since i bought it in april! Working during the day then being home in the evening, Wifi is never that far away - those times that it is, well I have a life!! :)

Matt 13

Waste of time!

In iPhone developer stamps out calculator profanity

FAIL

Seeing as though you can't disable built in apps, or replace them this means that if you wish to type rude words on the calc, then you just avoid the crap and open the default calculator app!!

Matt 13

'Just Ahead'

In ALK CoPilot Live 8

does the girl in the android have a wider ranging vocab than the iphone version?? I tend to fin that all my directions are 'Just ahead' with 'just ahead' being anything from half a mile to 20 yards past the turning! requiring constant eyballing of the screen?!

Matt 13

YES PLEASE!!

In SGI births smaller baby super

cool.... shame its a boring rectangular box, but I still need one... will look nice next to my Indigo 2, Octane 2 and my big old Onyx Infinite Reality!

Matt 13

not till the books come down in price...

In Sony writes up UK e-book viewer plan

FAIL

I went on holiday a few weeks ago and very nearly bought a sony reader, I love e-ink and desrerately want a reader! I was about to cough the £200 untill i noticed that the books are just as dear as the paper counterparts! to create and distribute paper books requires logistics, printing, and general human intervention... I dont mind paying for something nice... but a digital copy is costless...

does the author get a larger royalty from an ebook as the manufacturing and distribution costs are zero? the middlemen all get a bigger chunk and that isnt fair!

I would hapilly pay for an electronic title, if it was a sensible price, or like many of my bluerays - buy the physical media and get a free evectronic version too...

untill then... sony can bring out as many excellent readers as they want, its the bastards that are holding me back!!!

Matt 13

In Communist car given electric overhaul

now, if they think they can pull it off with the rrp, id be impressed and they will have the leccy market sewn up!

Matt 13

getting there!

In Apple MacBook Air June 2009

the MBA is getting there! more powerful, but still only one USB! it wouldnt be too hard to fit another on that chassis...

my mobile computing is catered for with a Vaio UX1XN so I wouldnt buy one... but if I was in the market for a £1400 smallish laptop, hmm... nope it would be a Vaio TT :)

Matt 13

I like!

In Mitsubishi iMiEV five-door e-car

Go

Thankfully a sensible dash - minimalist and energy saving! neon lighting all ofer the car interior and giant LCD displays are the last place i want my precious electicity going!!!

as this is based on a current petrol car, it would be interesting to see the price comparison between one of these and the IC equivelent - purcase price, cost per mile in fuel and the recyling cost, both in money and CO2 :)

If I had an unlimited supply of cash and lived in a city, with a garage at home, then Id quite fancy one of these...

Matt 13

the mind boggles

In Ofcom taps sailors for new fees

Thumb Up

howabout this for an idea... leave the Voluntary rescue services alone...

fire that room full of think-mongerers and you will instantly save a lifetimes amount of spectum revenue.

actually thats damn good PR... fire the twats - save money, gain some shred of public respect and only hurt a few people who are sick twisted, probably overpaid individuals that wont be missed anyway!

everyones a winner!!!!

Matt 13

In Boffins showcase do-it-yourself flying spy drone

am i missing something or is this just a radio control helicopter with a gps enabled digital camera strapped to its belly??

Matt 13

turn it off

In Lawsuit accuses T-Mobile of asking staff to email 'off the clock'

when i finish work, well, often a little before i finish, my work mobile is turned off and dumped in the bag along with work laptop...

if your time is that valuable get a personal phone/email companion, etc and leave works one for work... in my experience calls from a work phone generally dont offer candy floss and parties, but more work!

Matt 13

fill the tank....

In Men in Green step back from GM's 230mpg Volt claim

Stop

surely mpg/mpcharge should be measured as distance travelled without stopping... if the mpg claims are made with the car being recharged every 5 minutes then they are a waste of time...

a move away from mpg will be needed and miles per unit of energy will be needed... a comparable approximation of the cost of running an internal combustion engine + cost of charging a battery pack = overal cost of driving/cost to environment, this way an SUV with a tiny hybrid engine to bend its way into 'green tax bands' will still be less environmentaly sound than a small capacity compact diesel car...

while we have it, there should also be an Xyear/Xmiles TCO figure laid out - environal cost of raw production, transportation to dealer, replacement batteries, disposal + recycling to really force the car manufacturoers to not hide behind ludicrus mpg and buzz technologies, but to show commitment to the environment....

Matt 13

dun good

In NZ nude mum snap auction a hoax

Thumb Up

he sold 2 pics for $350 each... not bad...

Matt 13

downloads, no thanks!

In Toshiba tight-lipped on Blu-ray player plan

my current BD collection, whist modest is still 20 disks... thats a fair investment...

using SD cards and transfering them to a larger storage medium is inherently risky, the cards themselves are prone to corruption as would be a central home repository... while CD/DVD/BD can all be revived with some careful cleaning...

If my downloaded collection dies, can I re download them? a-la PS3 store style, or will i be buggered - much like my lost itunes purchases??

Disks and pretty blue boxes are the way forward!!

Matt 13

cool

In BenQ Joybee GP1 mini projector

now that is all good fun, £200 and id get one, but £500 is just too much for an impulse low res purchase, although i do love the size!
